Week One – in class letter exercise

For the first attempt, I’m trying to change an “e” into a “t”. Letter exercise 1 At first thought it seemed like it should be relatively straightforward if I just open up the e and straighten it out…but now I’m realizing I don’t know how to cut or break a line, so it might be more challenging than I thought! I decided to delete the anchor points on the inside of the e, and reform the top from there. Letter exercise 2

The next thing I’m noticing is that it’s definitely easier to change the anchor points to corner points rather than trying to straighten out the curve. However, sometimes even when I think the point is selected, it’s not converting. I’m not sure if I’m not clicking on the right part of the anchor point, or if something else is going on.  Letter exercise 3

I’m still not sure with the handles how to make them move independently of one another. Also, sometimes when I’m moving an anchor point and I have it where I want it, when I let go of the mouse, it seems to move a little. Maybe that’s just me though…I thought zooming might help, but so far not so much.  Letter exercise 4
It’s interesting too how when you’re adding anchor points, if it’s on a curve, they automatically have handles, and vice versa. And I think I have at least figured out why when you first select an anchor point with the direct selection tool it moves the whole thing – you have to double click on the point to select that individual one.

I felt like it was fairly straightforward to get the e into the basic shape of the t (not that there wasn’t some trial and error!), but I’m thinking the hardest part is the “fine tuning” to make it look the exact way I want!  Letter exercise 5
