Project Two drafts…
March 4, 2008
I finally got past designing the animals, and have started to play with layouts. Here’s what I have so far:
I like the basic look overall, but I’m afraid it might be too text heavy for a poster. I tried breaking up the text in a second draft, and playing with some of the text tools we talked about last week, but I haven’t come up with anything I really like yet. I guess that’s what next week is for.

Wow–cool prarie dogs! I like the look of the animal a lot, but I wonder if it would be possible to simplify (remove) some of the letterforms at the bottom of the animal bodies to simplify the shape any…I start to see the letters (this is at the bottom of their bodies only) more than the shapes of their bodies and was having a hard time not noticing all of them.
For the body text, yes, it does seem like a lot for a poster…it also has widows/orphans that you’d want to get rid of. Maybe if you could cut it down to two paragraphs, you could still keep it in the two column format you have now, which I really like, but just have a bit more white space to work with.
Really, though, awesome job with the prarie dog shapes!

Your prairie dogs look really playful and cute and your color and font choices are in line with that feel. Have you tried making the width of your text columns thinner? To prevent your poster from feeling crowded, maybe keep your body text under your subhead of the Latin name with some a comfortable space for your eye to rest. Moving some of the copy at the bottom into the circle behind the prairie dogs might be another option. Good job on manipulating your letter forms.

Definitely like the playful quality of this poster. You’ve done a great job of capturing the essence of the prairie dogs. A couple of things to alter and I think it will work perfectly. I know there isn’t a lot of time but if you could draw in more of the letterforms in the heads and less in the bodies, I think it would balance a lot better. There’s a big contrast between the two and it makes the bodies look too crowded to me. Also, I agree about the tight text at the bottom. Try to make the columns narrower if you can. Also, you might try using less text and break the text that remains into some sort of hierarchy with headers. I think that would give the viewer a little break in the text and allow this section to breathe a little bit more. Great work!

As said above, the prarie dogs look awesome and I love your color palette. I would trim down the amount of text and really make it more about a snippit of information-focusing more on the images themselves. I’m also not totally sure about the font choice for the title of your animal-maybe play with that a bit, but try not to lose the playfulness of the poster!
